Tired of lugging garden hoses? Apparently, you’re not alone. Jeff Thompson, a master gardener, offered to teach a how-to course on installing a micro drip irrigation system and the class was filled in less than two hours. So he offered another class, and it filled nearly as fast.
Why are gardeners so excited? Micro drip systems deliver water directly to plants via a network of plastic tubes. Watering becomes as simple as turning on the faucet. The supplies are cheap and micro drip wastes far less water than overhead sprinklers and even soaker hoses. Getting a system set up takes some planning but you can do it. Thompson explains exactly what to buy and what to do in today’s Home and Garden section.
Here are some additional resources online. Many of the manufacturers’ Web sites contain good information on the basic parts needed. This bulletin from a Colorado extension agent does a nice job of explaining how to design a system. I love that there’s even a micro drip irrigation forum.
