MAZAMA — Work to reopen Highway 20 has been stopped indefinitely.
Most highway maintenance work was suspended Thursday by the state Department of Transportation amid COVID-19 concerns, the department said in a news release.
Clearing began Monday at Early Winters Campground — milepost 177 — and crews reached milepost 172 before the work stoppage.
The 47-mile highway, often referred to as the North Cascades Highway, is closed every winter due to the risk of avalanche.
