LONGVIEW — The Longview City Council has lifted the city’s two-year ban on emergency homeless shelters.
The Daily News in Longview reported the council voted unanimously lifted the ban Thursday night.
New zoning regulations expected to take effect in about week will limit where shelters can be located. The moratorium will end as soon as the rules take effect.
The zoning regulations will also require buffers prohibiting the shelters around schools, residential areas, parks, daycares and other shelters.
Shelter applications must include a so-called “good neighbor agreement” describing the shelter’s plans.
The moratorium was spawned by growth in the community’s homeless problem and controversy over a low-barrier shelter that operated in Kelso until April this year.
