MIDLAND — Authorities in northwestern Washington state say a Pierce County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a 40-year-old man who charged at the deputy with a knife.
The News Tribune reported that deputies responded at about 11 p.m. Thursday after a woman called saying her son was suicidal, had taken methamphetamine and had a knife.
Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer says Matthew Wells talked with deputies but locked himself in a room and refused to come out.
Troyer says Wells then came out and charged at one of the deputies with a knife, and the deputy opened fire.
Wells was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies were not injured, and the deputy who fired shots has been placed on paid administrative leave.
