Recovery under way for climber who died on Mount Adams

The Portland-area man was caught in some sort of slide but was not buried.

TROUT LAKE — Authorities are working to recover the body of a 28-year-old Portland-area climber who apparently fell on Mount Adams over the weekend.

Yakima County Sheriff’s Sgt. Randy Briscoe said the man was caught in some sort of slide but was not buried. His body is at about 8,500-feet on the snow-covered volcano in southwest Washington.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Nate Boyers told the Oregonian that a helicopter was forced to turn back Tuesday because of snow and high wind. Authorities were looking at sending teams up on foot.

The Hillsboro, Oregon, man was climbing the popular south route on the 12,276-foot mountain with two friends, who called for help when they noticed he was no longer with them.

Backcountry skiers came across the man’s body on Sunday.
