SEATTLE — Police in Seattle arrested 13 people as authorities said people smashed windows and spray painted buildings during protests Wednesday night following a Kentucky grand jury’s decision to not indict officers in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor.
Police said one Seattle officer was struck in the head with a baseball bat, cracking his helmet. The officer was checked at the scene by the Seattle Fire Department and had minor injuries to his head and neck, SPD spokesman Sgt. Randy Huserik told the Seattle Times.
People were arrested on charges including resisting arrest, property destruction and refusing to disperse.
The King County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday it will investigate an incident captured on video in which a Seattle officer appears to roll a police bike over the head of a person lying in the street. The identity and condition of the person wasn’t known Thursday.
The civilian-led Office of Police Accountability requested a criminal investigation of the incident by an outside agency after the Seattle Police Department’s Force Investigation Team identified “potential violations of SPD policy, as well as potential criminal conduct,” OPA director Andrew Myerberg said Thursday.
Police had said they were aware of the video circulating on social media and that they activated the Force Investigation Team as required by policy.
The officer has been placed on paid leave, police said. The department declined to identify or offer other details about the officer.
