The woman shot by her 4-year-old son Saturday, Feb. 2 is now in stable condition, according to King County Sheriff’s Office.
The 27-year-old mother, who is eight months pregnant, was shot in the face and transported to Harborview Medical Center originally in critical condition. Her pregnancy is also stable, according to the sheriff’s office.
The accidental shooting occurred at 4:40 p.m. in Skyway at 12000 block of 71st Avenue South. She was watching TV at home with her boyfriend when the child found the handgun tucked between the mattress and the box spring.
The son fired the gun before the couple realized he had it, King County Sheriff’s Office said. The boyfriend, also the father of the child and unborn baby, had stored the weapon there for protection.
The father said he had borrowed the gun from his brother because he felt the neighborhood was dangerous. The gun was clear but detectives are unsure who it was registered to, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
An investigation is taking place. It’s possible charges will be filed, Sgt. Ryan Abbott with the Sheriff’s office said.
Unsafe storage of guns can result in a felony in Washington state.
