We would like to express our appreciation to state Sen. Jeralita Costa as she leaves public service. During her time in office Sen. Costa was a dedicated advocate for the welfare of mothers and their children. Among other legislation, she was instrumental in the passage of the bill which allows women to breastfeed in public without fear of harassment or being cited for indecent exposure.
This bill gives a measure of reassurance to women who choose to breastfeed and give their babies the very best nutrition. The 1997 policy statement of the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants be breastfed for at least 12 months. The policy is based on a growing body of research that supports the position that breastfeeding reduces the risk of many illnesses in babies and in their mothers as well. Many thanks, Sen. Costa. Your strong and reasoned voice will be missed.
