After following the state budget adjustments closely and upon seeing the final decisions, I was both disappointed and pleased by the legislators’ actions.
I approve of the increased tax on candy — though I occasionally buy it, a rise in price by a few cents on something which I only buy when I have some spare change in the first place is not going to stop me from consuming candy occasionally. I believe others will feel the same way, which will make it an effective way to fill part of the hole.
However, I believe that the increased business and occupation tax is not a wise decision in an area with B&O taxes that are already quite high. It could potentially have a negative impact on small businesses in an already struggling economy unless they raise prices, which for a consumer like myself, is not something I want to see.
Additionally, I am disappointed in the further cuts to education. I am a student, and have seen first-hand the effects of reduced funding to schools. They are not in any way positive. I do not want to have to continue to see increased class sizes and reduced quality of education for myself or my classmates.
