A new solution to marriage debate

I am in my 80s, struggling every day to keep up, stay in the loop and on the same page as everyone else. Recently, I heard about a man and woman I knew who were getting separated. They had two children. I asked my friend how long they had been married. She replied, “Oh, they were never married.” I don’t think I’ll ever get it all figured out, but I’m not sure it matters.

Amid all this controversy about gay and lesbian marriages these days, I think I may have a solution. When we can’t or won’t accept something different in our society, we just turn our backs on it (I don’t like Brussels sprouts, but they exist). But, we should not fear what we don’t understand. It is not a virus. I’ve decided it is just a matter of semantics. If we have another word for civil union, the problem would be solved! As for rights and privileges, that can be decided by lawmakers – whatever is fair. We should simplify, not complicate.

I favor the word “marbled.” It indicates solid and blend. It is a good word. “Married” for a man and woman and “marbled” for same sex.

So why all the fuss? Let’s just chill – whether you are married or marbled, don’t worry, be happy!
