I have a couple of thoughts to offer to Gerald Schackman, who wrote the Nov. 18 letter to the editor wondering why Rick Larsen voted against the Homeland Security bill.
Many of Larsen’s constituents (me included) are opposed to the Homeland Security bill and we took the time to write and call him to ask him to vote against it.
By the way, he was also representing me, and thousands like me, when he voted against giving the president the power to take us into a war with Iraq.
It is also possible that Rep. Larsen understands that the 480-page Homeland Security Bill takes away many of our personal rights in the process of trying to fight terrorism. I respect his long-term view of things.
As far as trying to subtly smear Rep. Larsen by linking him with Rep. Jim McDermott: It is very possible to be against a war with Iraq and be patriotic. It is very possible to vote against the Homeland Security bill and be patriotic. It is very patriotic to be against a bill that takes away so many of our rights.
