Abundance of giving is truly inspiring

The week before Christmas I had the opportunity, along with other members of the Rotary Club of Monroe, to volunteer at the Sky Valley Food Bank in Monroe. It was truly a heartwarming experience. Along with the abundance of food that was distributed, toys and gifts for children were provided as well. On one day alone that I was there, nearly 1,000 people’s needs were met and more than 400 children’s Christmas was made merrier.

There is an awesome team of staff and volunteers, under the direction of director Julie Morris, who do an incredible job handling the logistics and the daunting labor load required to service all of those in need. Many of the volunteers have devoted years of service to their community through their efforts at the food bank. We are all very fortunate to have such dedicated and caring neighbors.

One thing that was most impressive to me was the sheer volume of food and gifts that were made available to distribute. As fast as boxes of food went out the front door, truckloads of food and gifts were coming in the back door. Businesses, community organizations, schools and many individuals all contributed in a variety of ways. The generosity exhibited was inspiring to say the least. Everyone who came seeking a helping hand was abundantly provided for.

I’m thankful that I live in a community where so many people are willing to continually respond to the needs of those less fortunate, not only at Christmas time, but throughout the year. Happy New Year!
