Who is the greater threat to our democratic form of government, John Walker or John Ashcroft? As appalling as Walker’s behavior may be, he poses no real threat to our institutions. Ashcroft, on the other hand, has savaged the Constitution in his overzealous attempt to round up suspects. American’s should observe these tactics with increased suspicion and profound contempt. The trundling off of suspects in the middle of the night to maximum-security prisons where they are kept for months on end, without counsel and without being charged with a crime, is a practice more consistent with the activities of the KGB than the United States Justice Dept. It is certain that justice will not be served on Ashcroft’s watch. Which begs the question, when did we collectively decide to abandon liberty for security? Or, rather, when did man’s inalienable rights only apply to Americans. Apparently, these questions are of no consequence to those who simply ignore the rule of law.
If justice was truly served, John Ashcroft would occupy a spot in the docket next to John Walker for his treasonable attack on the Bill of Rights and for violating his sacred oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
