Amid all this news of overpaid bank executives and what is not being shared with the 99 percent of Americans, I want to offer a word of praise for the generous gift to our community from Bank of America.
In November 2010, long before the Occupy Wall Street movement began, I was honored to receive a Bank of America Local Hero Award for volunteering at Cocoon House as a mentor. This honor included a $5,000 contribution to Cocoon House, which enabled us to rehab a building for our Street Outreach program we call U-Turn. The bank also presented two awards for $200,000 each to nonprofits in the Seattle area.
Bank of America presents Neighborhood Builder Awards to local nonprofit organizations that contribute to creating healthy and safe communities. Last month Bank of America awarded Cocoon House a 2011 Neighborhood Builder award, which includes $200,000 in unrestricted funding over two years and leadership training for developing executives.
I want to thank Bank of America for this very generous award. This award will make a difference in numerous lives in our community. Cocoon House serves a small and growing, very vulnerable part of the 99 percent. The kids we serve have nowhere else to turn in Snohomish County. This money is for the kids we serve and they are in desperate need of support.
Bank of America supports the Cocoon House Mission: Fostering personal growth and healthy relationships to strengthen and empower at-risk and homeless youth and their families. Thank you, Bank of America, for all you do in our community.
