In response to the letter, “Climate Change: Still denying scientific fact”: I must ask what “scientific fact” the letter writer is referring to? There is no such thing as “95 percent of climatologists” agreeing to significant contributions by humans to global warming. There has been no significant warming for the last 18 years and the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change models have been shown to be way off the mark. The analogies to life-threatening cancer and the tobacco industry have nothing to do with global warming.
Let me present some verifiable facts.
1) The UN IPCC charter limited the committee to identifying only human causes of warming.
2) CO2 makes up an insignificant 0.04 percent of the earth’s greenhouse gases.
3) Water vapor is a much greater part of the earth’s atmosphere.
4) CO2 is required for life; it is not a pollutant.
5) Solar activity has been shown to be the most significant determinant of climate change.
6) Average earth temperature was much warmer during the medieval age, without any fossil fuels being burned.
7) We have been coming out of a little “ice age” over the last few hundred years, and should expect some warming.
8) More than 31,000 people (9,000 with doctorates, including myself) have signed a petition that “there is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of … carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the earth’s atmosphere and disruption of the earth’s climate.”
Yes the climate has been, still is, and will always be, changing. Let’s not confuse the climate with the weather.
