After reading the Tuesday letter about Everett schools, “Union dictates starting date?” I felt compelled to write. I am proud to be a teacher in the Everett School District and can’t wait for the first day of school.
The writer obviously has not driven by my school recently, because if he did, he would have seen parents, students and staff out weeding the flowerbeds one warm day this month. Or he would have seen several hundred parents and students who showed up for orientation last week that was made possible by many staff who volunteered their time.
On any given day, there are countless cars in the parking lot of teachers setting up their rooms, planning their curriculum for the start of school, giving tours to new students, etc. Unfortunately, readers of The Herald keep hearing the same negative spin when it comes to the Everett School District’s teachers. If there could just be one article that doesn’t dwell on the surveillance camera issue… talk about beating a dead horse. That horse has been dead and buried for months.
To the letter writer, we will be looking for volunteers in the spring to listen to students share what they have accomplished in a year. I think he will be amazed at what is done at my “failing” school! I’ll be in touch.
