Kudos to The Herald’s Friday article, “He found a friend,” about the Bruin Buddies. I know firsthand how valuable these programs can be. My children’s father passed away in 1993 when they were just 6, 7, 8, and 10. Marysville Pilchuck had a Big Buddy program that matched high school students with elementary children needing some extra attention.
Each child was matched with a Big Buddy that had similar interests. My boys were very athletic so they were matched with young men who were athletes, and also compassionate, intelligent young men. My girls were matched with equally compassionate, strong, and intelligent young women. It was a win-win situation. I can remember those young adults like it was yesterday. That is the impact they had on our whole family.
I encourage all high schools to initiate this kind of program at their school. It is so beneficial for all involved. Thank you to Brooks, Tommy, Anne and Lane — you will never know how much of a positive impact you had on our lives.
