In response to the Wednesday editorial, “Stop ‘paddling’ in schools”: I can only agree that such corporal punishment should not inflict any lasting injuries, nor should such punishment ever be done in anger.
Dr. Spock was the leading “expert” on child rearing in the ’50s and ’60s, and a leading promoter of permissiveness. Later in his final years of life, he looked around and came to the conclusion the we raised a generation of “brats.” He further stated that, “Of course we did it with the best of intentions…we didn’t realize, until it was too late, how our know-it-all attitude was undermining the self-assurance of parents.” If 19 states permit “paddling,” with a witness, maybe it would be wise for the rest of the states to follow suit. The editorial stated that, “It is incomprehensible that this is still a matter of debate when it comes to the behavior of our public schools personnel.” Excuse me!
How can anyone in their right mind not see the detrimental changes in society as a result permissiveness? What happened to the “Yes sir, no sir.” Why do we have a total disregard for authority? What happened to a child’s role model that they used to have, like a firemen or policemen? What happened to the respect for private property? Today when the police say, “stop” they run. Society has slid down the slippery slope of Rome, and will fall from within if we do not see the real moral decay in us.
A famous author one wrote, “Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him. The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.”
