In regard to the Aug. 7 letter “Freed journalists: Who pays the bill for their rescue?”: My question is, is the writer upset because the rescue came quickly or the fact they are women?
The writer chastises the young women for being in the wrong place at the wrong time and then throws former Vice President Al Gore into the mix.
Old history is then brought forward of then-President Carter, in the United States’ attempt to free our hostages in Iran. It’s not mentioned that this was the first time an attempt like that was tried. From that we learned how helicopters and other equipment couldn’t operate properly in sand. We did get them back, as a snub to Carter, not as a favor to the incoming Reagan team.
The writer then blasts President Johnson and mentioned the border guards that were held for so long under Bush’s watch. The issue here is who pays. He does. We all do. These freed journalists are citizens of the U.S.A.
We paid for this, as well as George Bush Sr. taking a birthday jump out of a U.S. Air Force plane along with several military jumpers. The secured field and staff, I’m sure, were all military. Not to mention the platoon of Secret Service on hand to keep the Bush family safe from their loving public. Also, remember “Mission Accomplished!” We’re still paying for that one.
Is there nothing this country can do to be united? There is a continual put down of any effort to do something good or make a change. If anyone of you can do it better or make a change, get involved. We all pay for what the government does, whether we support it or not.
