I read the McClatchy article, “Officials: Census mistrust misplaced,” in Monday’s paper with interest. I am another one of the skeptics mentioned.
The article quotes a Professor Eschbach of the University of Texas as saying, “…and you are worried about the government knowing how you classify yourself by race and ethnicity for purposes of allocation of funds?” Quite frankly, yes, I am.
Allocation of government funds by race or ethnicity is discrimination, which we all know is illegal. Since the government is essentially admitting to illegal use of the data, they should not be surprised that some of us will not answer that question. I notice this article was published on the Ides of March. That’s pure coincidence, right?
