For proof that dedication and hard work can make anything possible, look no further than Archbishop Thomas J. Murphy High School.
In just three seasons of interscholastic football, the Wildcats have won two state championships. Saturday’s 20-0 victory over previously unbeaten Zillah in the Class A title game capped a 14-0 season and extended Archbishop Murphy’s amazing winning streak to 26. Not bad for a program that didn’t even exist until coach Terry Ennis formed a fledgling junior varsity team three years ago.
And it comes just two weeks after the boys soccer team won its own state championship, and the girls soccer team got to the state title game, falling 1-0.
It’s pretty heady stuff for a school that started as Holy Cross High School in Everett, with just 23 students at its founding in 1988. And the Wildcats aren’t content to stay where they are. They’re tentatively set to opt up to Class 2A next school year, competing against bigger schools from a wider area.
Based on what we’ve seen from the Wildcats so far, they’ll be ready.
