In wake of current world events and the controversial role of the United States in the Middle East, we believe that the offensive movements being made by the United States are unnecessary and the troops need to be revoked from the area.
The terrorism that occurred on Sept. 11 triggered a disputable confrontation between the United States and the terrorist organization headed by Osama bin Laden. By sending United States troops overseas, our nation hopes to resolve our problems with these terrorist organizations by means of revenge. Truthfully, however, we see no resolution in doing so – it is merely a waste of human lives. Innocent lives are being taken from citizens of Afghanistan, who have no say in their country’s political movements, and from the United States troops.
Terrorist acts are not a new concept to the American government, but unlike other revengeful acts, we cannot “turn the other cheek.” Our government had no way of predicting the tragic events of terrorism because we do not fully comprehend the mentality of the terrorists themselves. The task that we have before us, defeating terrorism, seems as though it is almost impossible. Americans cannot let their lives be surrendered to terrorist acts and fear of unknown circumstances. We must place our trust in a government who has protected us from terrorism since our Founding Fathers by sacrificing our human resources. Yet, is it worth it this time? Should America really risk its sovereignty fighting a war against an unbeatable enemy?
By sending more troops overseas and diving deeper into a war that is virtually unwinnable, the morale of the American people will gradually plummet if the war is extended for years on end. We do not need more families in grief over the loss of loved ones because our country has suffered enough. The overwhelming feeling of revenge needs to subside and we need a reality check. In the end, no matter who wins or loses, terrorism will more than likely still live on, while the lives of those who naively fought against it will have been sacrificed. We need to back off and rebuild our country before destroying another.
In the end Americans need to pull together, continue salvaging our sovereignty, and innovate new ways of fighting terrorism. While not underestimating the power of opposing nations, we need to develop a stronger unity, both nationally and internationally. We need to get off our high horse and stop being so ethnocentric because we, like other nations, are all precious humans and we need not waste these lives.
