Regarding the Tuesday editorial: “Those elephants in the room”: Thank you for your thoughtful editorial calling on the Ringling Bros. Circus to emancipate its elephant performers.
It takes a particular brand of blindness for a shrewd businessman like Kenneth Feld (Ringling’s owner), to be in such utter denial of his cruelly archaic business model. It seems Feld would rather go into a cage of hungry tigers than admit that more and more people believe the use of animals in entertainment is wrong.
Given the undeniable groundswell of public opposition to beating and whipping animals, ripping babies from their mothers, and keeping elephants in chains, it’s no wonder audiences are flocking to Cirque du Soleil by the millions. Indeed, the number of animal-free circuses has skyrocketed. These fresh and innovative productions make it clear that animals don’t need to be caged and forced to perform demeaning tricks to entertain people.
