An article in the Thursday Herald indicated that I support a new Wal-Mart in Mill Creek. As stated in the article, no one, including myself, spoke in favor of Wal-Mart at the hearing. I was not asked to comment on the issues raised at the hearing. I had previously told the reporter that I did not believe that all Wal-Mart does is bad – that in fact we have examples of good they have done in communities.
I did publicly vote for the recent annexation that contained an area east of 35th Avenue where a proposed large commercial retailer is slated to be built. Supporting this annexation does not in any way mean I support Wal-Mart! I voted for the annexation realizing we were going to have a large commercial retailer in our neighborhood regardless – either in Mill Creek or directly across the street in the county. Financially, having a large commercial retailer is good for our city. An application was made to Snohomish County in August, 2002 by Graymor Development, supposedly on behalf of Wal-Mart. At that point they became legally “vested” under the county’s current zoning of community business. I support the legal process and must treat any business fairly and according to the law.
Annexing the area made sense because shoppers will come to this retailer regardless of whether it is in Mill Creek or Snohomish County. Mill Creek’s design and environmental controls are more restrictive than in the county, which will help them become better neighbors (i.e. overnight parking is prohibited). There will be more frequent police patrols and presence to this area by city officers. I will do everything in my power to ensure Wal-Mart or any retailer becomes the best neighbor possible. I will listen and evaluate any concerns brought to our council. Thank you.
Donna Michelson, Mayor
City of Mill Creek
