In the Sept. 6 edition of the Snohomish Tribune, Snohomish City Councilman Larry Countryman wrote an open letter to the citizens of Snohomish, in effect, stating he was in charge of the Snohomish River. He famously stated “The Snohomish River may never flood again,” despite major “100-year” floods in 1975, 1990, 1995, and now in 2006.
The Army Corps of Engineers and FEMA need to redefine a “100-year” flood. It appears the Snohomish River Valley suffers a major, disastrous flood every 10 or 15 years. Can you imagine what a catastrophic flood would do to the valley in the next 100 years?
The good citizens of Snohomish need to tell their City Council members not to annex the area south of the river into the city. Annexing this area would be tying an albatross around the necks of Snohomish city taxpayers.
The city’s southern boundary, the Snohomish River, has stood in place for well over 100 years and for good reasons.
