Well, I see that I have to take on Super Cougar-booster and Husky-hater Herald columnist John Sleeper again this year. Last year (Nov. 27) I wrote a response to his scathing and wrongly focused article condemning Husky alumni during the football season. He wrote the article right after the Apple Cup game (I think the Husky 51-3 win had gotten to the soft spot in his brain) and The Herald Editorial Board supported him with an editorial a day later.
Now, on Monday, he used the Husky shellacking by Oregon State (49-24) as an excuse to vilify the whole Husky football team. What a headline for his column – “Get real, Husky fans, team isn’t that good.” Well, I’ve got news for him: we knowledgeable Husky fans didn’t think they were that good either. But we don’t need Sleeper to tell us the obvious and rub it in with smart remarks and emphasizing sarcastically the Husky shortcomings in the game.
For a good reason, I read this rambling column three times. Based on his headline, I wanted to see if I could detect any substance to the article, but I could not. He mentioned Oregon and Washington State University teams as well as OSU and what I saw in every paragraph was some either direct or indirect satirical or sarcastic comment related to the Husky football team. I could even sense the joy he was experiencing in writing the piece. He reached his lowest point (under the snake’s belly) with his cheap and dumb rhetoric on Cody Pickett, who was playing hurt.
I am not a journalist, but I can read and write and analyze written articles. Sleeper gets a very good grade for “Husky hate” and “sarcasm,” but for the article as a whole, they didn’t provide a grade for this one, because it’s called garbage.
