Appreciation to parents for support during crisis

On Sept. 11, Americans were stunned and grief-stricken by the horrific events unfolding on the East Coast. The destruction hit New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C., but the shock waves touched us all.

As superintendent, I was called upon to decide if our schools should remain open. My primary concern, as always, was with the safety and emotional welfare of our students. After weighing the options, I decided it was important to maintain as much stability as possible, so we operated our regular programs and services.

In response to the terrorist attacks, parents also weighed the options to determine what was best for their families. Some decided to keep their children at home, while others sent them to school. That was as it should be – with loving parents making the appropriate choice for their own children.

I want to express my deepest appreciation to our parents for their overwhelming support during this crisis. Additionally, I want to commend the Northshore School District employees who came to work last week to keep our schools running smoothly. These fine professionals were separated from their own families but willingly provided compassionate support and reassurance to Northshore students.

In times like these, our strength is tested. Our parents, our staff and our students made me proud. Please accept my sincere thanks.
