It is so puzzling to me that even with the most blatant evidence in front of them (such as Saddam Hussein’s governance) some letter writers do not recognize the obvious: that it is the leaders of some of the Muslim countries who themselves perpetrate the worst crimes by far against those people under their rule.
Our policies are used by those heads of government as a tool to deflect the roots of the anger and frustration and poverty and deprivation from themselves so that they are not perceived as accountable.
Having lived for years in the Middle East (Libya and Iran) in the 1960s, I can say without equivocation that the devastating brutality, exploitation and demoralization in those Muslim countries came from internal influences rather than external ones. You can be sure that they did not need us to teach them about injustice. How well they are now succeeding in pulling the wool over the eyes of some of us.
