I appreciate The Herald’s thoughtful editorial on the topic of NFL players protesting during the anthem (“If Trump can tweet, players can kneel,” The Herald, Aug. 14). There are various origin stories about how “taking a knee” came about. My only experience has been watching Little Leaguers drop to one knee when another player is hurt or maybe just needs a moment to catch his breath. So, yes, a simple gesture to show concern, empathy, perhaps affection for a buddy.
And that’s how I interpret the NFL players’ protests: As a way of acknowledging a wounded player (America), showing genuine concern and hope for its recovery — that it may someday live up to all its ideals. Despite constant (and bizarre) protestations from MAGA fanatics (check out the online comments in any newspaper) I do believe the country is being severely damaged by the current grotesque regime, aided and abetted by most of the legislature. It’s a shame.
Anyway, the NFL guys might differ on this, but that’s my take. I think they’re saying we have some extremely serious problems that need to be fixed once and for all — stat! Hardly disrespectful. Given some recent events (the border kidnappings for starters, and shootings, shootings, shootings!), I’m surprised the fans don’t take a knee themselves!
Saw a “Make America Smart Again” bumper sticker yesterday. I second the motion.
