The Republican National Convention has concluded, hurricanes continue to threaten Florida and former President Bill Clinton recently underwent bypass surgery. Each story is significant, and the ramifications of each may prove to be earth-shattering. However, my heart truly weeps for the hundreds dead and hundreds more hospitalized in the Beslan, Russia, school siege.
As the crisis of the ruthless militants holding more than 1,000 hostages unfolded, I could not help but think about the vulnerability of our schools and children here in the United States. As a parent of four school-age children, in a world where the likelihood of terrorism is on the rise, I am vividly aware of the less-than-secure perimeters of our school campuses. I can only hope and pray that those contemplating terrorism have more heart and compassion than did the terrorists in Russia, and that those who provide security for our nation’s many schools heed the warning signs. Living in the city that houses the largest high school in the state of Washington, I am extremely hopeful that authorities have taken measures to safeguard our schools and protect the innocent children, our most vulnerable and valuable assets, from such violent acts.
