A Jan. 3 article reported that students and school officials were “giddy” for new Snohomish schools. Who’s not so giddy maybe? The poor taxpayer. The reported savings through the use of recycled materials was, I am sure, more than offset by the unusual design of the school library. The article showed photos of the library and its curved outer wall. We can only hope the construction of the rest of the school was of a more conventional design.
With each new school design, administrators and architects continue to reinvent the wheel, and several years down the road discover just how impractical these designs are. In cases such as this they are poor stewards of the taxpayers’ dollars.
Aside from the skill and craftsmanship of the trades people involved in these projects, buildings of this type are little more than a monument to some architect’s ego.
The solution to this is to have off-the-shelf approved state plans that school officials would have to base their project on in order to get funding.
If administrators and government officials don’t see the waste in this type of construction perhaps it would be a good cause for a initiative sponsor to take up.
