Regarding the Tuesday editorial, “Would teacher prefer ammo over an apple?”:
The author “speaks down” to the school district of Harrold, Texas, which has authorized its teachers to carry concealed weapons. A previous article in The Herald reported that the school district was 30 minutes from police response. The editorial neglected to point out that little detail. When I looked up Harrold, Texas, on the Internet, it said it was 18 miles from the sheriff’s office — maybe not 30 minutes, but a long way. Also, it was 1,000 feet from U.S. 287. This situation would make anyone nervous about the safety of school children in today’s environment.
Wouldn’t anyone have loved to have an armed person on Oct. 2, 2006 to shoot Charles Roberts right between the eyes before he could slaughter five little Amish girls ages 6 to 13, one having more than 24 shots to her body? The coroner requested to be relieved by someone else. Five more little girls were left critically wounded. Charles Roberts carried sexual lubricant, apparently intending to rape these little girls.
Don’t give us that holier than thou, liberal, kumbaya bull looking down on teachers carrying weapons to protect their charges. I’m sure they won’t be forced to do it. Nothing would be more counter-productive than having a wimp with a gun. In Harrold, Texas, no doubt there are capable teachers who are very familiar with guns and they would be the ones doing this. I’m sure the Harrold, Texas, school district will make certain that these people are well-trained and have a strict protocol in place.
There have been several school situations where I wish there had been an armed person on the spot to stop the massacres. Now, really, doesn’t The Herald’s editorial board also wish the same thing?
