I believe I was misrepresented in the Aug. 19 article, “Tips on Choosing Your Future Best Friend.” I was quoted as saying, “those shopping for purebred dogs can take several precautions to ensure that a pet has been properly taken care of before buying it.” Although this statement is true, the fact is that dogs and cats should be adopted, not purchased. Five million cats and dogs are put to death every year in shelters around this country because there aren’t enough loving homes to go around. The breeding of dogs and cats occurs at the expense of these millions of animals, and plays a direct role in causing the overpopulation crises in the United States.
