Kudos to Susan Martin and her letter, “Singers need to rein in syllables.” She has expressed the feelings I have had for many years about the “singing” of the national anthem at sporting events, fairs and other public events.
I believe it is extremely disrespectful to sing the “Star Spangled Banner” in any other way than how it was written. “Artistic license” is a feeble excuse for turning our national anthem into sounding like a gospel revival. That includes those few in the crowd who feel they must vocally respond to the “wavers” or “screaming” with Yaa, Woo or whatever. These are probably the same ones who fail to remove their hats or place their hand over their heart to honor the flag and their nation.
One of the finest renditions of the national anthem I can recall was sung at a Seahawk game by a very young girl with a beautiful voice. Event producers should take heed.
