As long as the subject is women’s health and abortion …

Let me get this straight, the author of a recent letter to the editor regarding abortion is worried about women’s safety. He cites 10 medical emergencies statewide for Planned Parenthood abortions, out of increasing numbers over 13 years. Therefore, “Women deserve better than abortion!” I say, those are damn good odds.

The problem is, we are not as stupid as he thinks we are. Tulane University’s School of Public Health and Tropical Diseases finds that states with strict abortion rules, have higher mortality rates. In case the letter writer doesn’t know, mortality means death. (I don’t recall any mention of death in his commentary.) And don’t get me started on the mortality rates of black women trying to have children.

Now, even women who want children must be near death in order to receive life-saving abortion care. Don’t let anyone hide behind the exceptions to the law as its justification. They are blowing smoke. If you really care about women, you would let them decide, with the help of their doctor, what is best for them. No woman should be forced to suffer in order to “protect” the viability of a non-sentient organism that may eventually become a person. To quote the philosopher Tim Walz, “Mind your own damn business!”

If you think that this is the last of the rights some want to take away, you are mistaken. The right distracts you with these cultural issues, while they steal your right to education, cheaper housing, clean water and air, etc, under the guise of patriotism or religiosity and “caring.” Don’t be fooled. In 2024, blue is the color of freedom.
