“All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others” – from the novel “Animal Farm” by George Orwell.
In the last presidential election, the current occupier of the White House spoke of “getting the government off of the people’s backs,” “giving power back to the states” and “trusting the people.” Maybe Bush had his fingers crossed or maybe he honestly forgot to inform his attorney general of his campaign rhetoric. Whatever the case, John Ashcroft recently decided that he knew better than the citizens of Oregon and tried to arbitrarily subvert an Oregon law that had been passed twice by the voters and was ruled constitutional by the Supreme Court.
Ashcroft may not agree with the patient’s right to die law, but his responsibility is to see that laws are enforced and not to overturn laws that have been mandated by the people. There should be a lot of outraged voters who feel that they were deceived in the 2000 election. After all, nearly half of the people that voted endorsed Bush/Cheney.
