I felt compelled to tell the community about a wonderful event I was invited to attend. I was invited to a Marysville Pilchuck High School get-together, the track and field team banquet. Recently I feel there has been some bad press about coaches and sports at this high school. I was thinking that I would be there for a few hours and it might be a bit of a bore. I was astounded, to say the least, when no less than a hundred proud parents and kids showed up to show their support. It was a potluck and everybody brought a dish.
The coaching staff honored all of the student athletes that had worked so hard this year. At times the crowd broke out in standing ovations for the athletes, because of course, they made it to state. At the end, when the coaches had gone through their proud accolades for their kids, almost in tears at times, the kids went on stage and showed their appreciation for the coaches who had believed in them throughout their season and gave their thanks for their coaches hard work.
In the end, they all got together and sang the school song. The sense of community and pride that was evident in that room was amazing. I found myself clapping and cheering right along. Being there that night gave me such admiration for such effort put forth, not only by the teachers and coaches who care so much about their kids, but by the high school students who worked so hard this year. Bravo to such a great community that cares about its kids.
