Regarding the Sept. 25 article, “Clash stalls reopening of highway”:
John James Audubon would turn over in his grave if he found out that an organization bearing his name was being used by Johnny come lately eco-extremists to discriminate against old folks, handicapped and physically impaired people. The efforts by the Pilchuck Audubon Society to eliminate the Mountain Loop Highway and restrict the part being abandoned to only those physically able to maneuver a difficult trail system is criminal at the least. It violates the federal anti-discrimination act among others and if pursued should result in criminal proceeding being initiated against that group.
The Mountain Loop Highway has been a source of great enjoyment to thousands of local people who have delighted in the drive from Granite Falls to Darrington for more than 50 years. It has also been on the list of most scenic drives for numerous tourists during the same period. The kind of extremists represented by the Audubon Society who have been involved in closing off many other areas of access to handicapped, elderly and physically challenged people should not be welcome in responsible society.
