Global warming has surfaced as an issue despite being discredited and sidelined by the combined forces of media, government, business and industry. Like fossil fuel depletion and mass extinction of species, the topic of global warming threatens business as usual, placing science in a head-on collision with decision-making elites of consumer democracies.
Economics, like religion, must be a doctrine and not a science. It’s real directive is to maintain an illusion of hope. Economists will compare the destruction of European forest in the 18th century for fuel and farmlands with the “progressive” transition to a hypothetical hydrogen economy. This is done to prove economic growth will go on indefinitely, that any declining resource will be compensated by another, and human ingenuity, like human greed, know no limits.
Change is inevitable. Avoiding discussion as demonstrated by the media’s persistent praise of industrial civilization, glorification of consumerist ideology, and war propaganda is not. Ignorance in the face of fossil fuel depletion, denial of planetary limits, and military responses to geo-physical realities cannot vanquish anything — except our existence.
