The attack on Gabrielle Giffords and the killing of bystanders is a very sad thing for their families and friends. It is also a sad day for American citizens who are genuinely concerned about our country and look forward to engaging with their representatives in an open forum.
I can only imagine that the kind of meeting Rep. Giffords had with her constituents will not be as frequent or as open in the future between other politicians and the people they represent. While there has been some blame placed on political rhetoric, the fact is that this was a mindless attack by a mentally deranged person who should have been confined.
How we guard against this is probably on the mind of every law enforcement officer in the country and also lawmakers. Hopefully such attacks can be stopped in the future without closing off discourse between our representatives and the people they represent.
