Well, here we are again, it’s that time of year. Monday the 15th I was out riding my motorcycle in pretty nice weather, temperature around 53-55 degrees and dry. As I’m riding along I heard a very odd and irritating noise coming up along side me, it was some moron driving on dry pavement on four studded tires! Yes, I know they are legal until the first of April (or until a cop hears you driving on them in July) but where did common sense get off the bus?
This individual apparently is blissfully unaware that he (and thousands just like him) are directly responsible for over $10 million in damage done every year to the roads in Washington that we really do not have the money to fix by using studded tires on dry, not icy or snowy pavement. Just look at the wagon ruts in I-5 caused by studs on dry pavement, hint, that’s why your car wallows around on the freeway.
As an aside to our dead-on-both-ends “elected” representatives (hint here — do the peoples’ work, not the lobbyists’) who sit on their brains and refuse to outlaw carbide studded winter tires, plastic studs seem to work just fine in states that get a lot more snow and ice than Washington does. Let’s outlaw carbide studded tires once and for all.
Remember, at least I view each of my “elected representatives” as temporary light bulbs and if I don’t like the glow coming from you, I’ll work very hard to get a replacement for you.
