I am writing in response to the May 29 Herald article (Page A5) stating the Iraqis called the rescue of PFC Lynch from the Iraqi hospital “overkill.” I take exception to this armchair quarterback criticism of our uniformed forces. Anyone who believes this propaganda needs to be enlightened.
Persons who have been in a combat zone or even have trained for armed conflict can tell you that when weapons fire is audible and/or visible you are to be locked, loaded and ready for full engagement. The detachment sent to rescue this soldier from the hospital was acting in accordance with standard operating procedures.
I challenge any of the would-be detractors of our military to put on the flak vest helmet and go into a situation similar to the one at that Baghdad hospital and see how much additional firepower they would like to have backing them up.
