My children and I were in the Fourth of July parade this year to support Kim Halvorson and the Snohomish County Republicans.
As we proudly sat in the back of Kim’s truck waving at the spectators, I was shocked at the looks, gestures and comments we received. I anticipated some of this, but not to this degree, being at what I thought was a family event. Now while I believe that every citizen is entitled to their opinion, I too feel that I am entitled to my opinion. My children were there just being kids having fun. Although, I noticed some adult Democrats were not only being rude to me, but to my children as well. And their children were acting in the same manner as the adults.
We all are given the freedom to have our own beliefs, but I don’t feel that being rude and cruel is an acceptable form of voicing your freedom. If I am ever approached by a person representing the Democratic Party and even agree with them, I don’t know that I will forget how my children and I were treated. This is my second experience with plain cruelty with my children present.
Our country is the greatest nation on this earth because we all have the freedom to choose what we believe. We also have the responsibility to voice our opinion in a respectful way. I would hope that we could all remember that as adults, we are teaching our children how to become adults, to voice their opinions, and to hopefully change our world for the better. As role models to our nation’s children, this would not be different, Republican or Democrat.
As we adults use the freedom given to us, I hope that we remember our children and how we would want them to use their freedom.
