This is in response to the Monday letter, “Chinese subsidies must end first”:
I would like to elaborate further on the importance of buying products harvested only in our local areas, i.e., Canada, Alaska
, Mexico and the United States. About six weeks ago we became acutely aware of the fact that a large portion of our seafood is being farmed in Asian countries such as China, Thailand and Vietnam. Some is being raised in human waste ponds. They are processed and filled with preservatives to keep the seafood fresh and shipped to our country for consumption.
This is a fact! Several of our large grocery outlets are selling these seafoods and have been for some time.
How could this happen? Have we become so complacent in our comfortable lifestyle that we don’t take time to read the labels or ask where it comes from?
I guess we assume that our government would never allow such products into our country for human consumption. Wrong. We need to read labels on canned and processed foods. It doesn’t stop there. Do you eat out? Most likely that prawn dinner you had recently or the tilapia or the catfish dinner was raised in human waste ponds. Restaurants are using this seafood. It costs them less than if purchased locally. Do you think I am wrong that this couldn’t happen in our country? Check it out for yourselves.
