A hand-painted sign at the trailhead of Mission Beach reads “Show pride, respect the land, please pack out all garbage – thank you!” There are stewards of the beach who, on a daily basis, collect other peoples’ litter and pack it off the beach in an attempt to protect, preserve and honor this special place.
In the celebration of our “freedom” holiday, the aftermath was disrespectful and disgraceful. What is the impact of fireworks and litter on the environment and wildlife? Of particular concern is the contamination/pollution of the water and beach and how that affects salmon, crab, whale and eagle habitat. For all the people who enjoy the privilege of using this private beach, it is disgusting and unsafe for babies, children and adults alike to walk and play in the sand littered with broken glass, sharp cans, dirty diapers, fireworks debris, etc.
In viewing especially what remains after the Fourth of July “celebration,” I am angered and feel embarrassed to be an “American.” Where is the individuals’ sense of pride and responsibility in everyday life, especially when honoring our national holiday?
