Beer thief brings out best in others

I am the 77-year-old “old lady” who was injured on Feb. 26 when I happened to be between a kid stealing beer from Safeway and his get-away car.

I feel I am anything but an “old lady.” Although I only spent one night in the hospital, I am still in a lot of pain from the injuries to my body. Seems the kid not only knocked me and my cart over but managed to sprawl on me so that his weight combined with mine caused more damage. The only person at fault in this whole thing is the kid who knocked me down and, as a victim of a crime, I will probably end up paying the co-pays for the hospital, ambulance, etc., as well as losing three days’ income. Oh, well, life is not fair and you just have to suck it up and get on with it.

Kudos to all the wonderful people who came to my aid in one way or another. One lady named Michelle took my scarf and held it to the back of my head to stop the bleeding while another lady ran to her car to get another scarf to use as a pillow, and yet another lady grabbed my hand and prayed over me.

Also, one man jumped in his car and tried to follow the get-away car and a female Safeway employee ran after the car. A young male Safeway employee carefully listed all my groceries, put them away and, then, used that list a couple of days later to gather them for me.

I do not remember a thing about the assault, which may be a blessing. But it sure points out that most people are really nice and caring and I do thank you, one and all, for your concern.
