The question wasn’t whether golfers were going to drink alcohol on Everett’s municipal golf courses. They already do.
The question was whether Everett would be in a position to monitor consumption and derive some financial benefit from it.
Wisely, the Everett City Council took that course, voting Wednesday to allow the sale of beer and wine from a cart at Legion Memorial and Walter E. Hall golf courses.
Currently, players aren’t shy about wetting their whistle by packing cans of beer in their golf bag — the evidence is in the trash cans at nearly every tee box. Giving folks legal access to a cold one decreases the incentive to pack their own, and gives golf course employees a much better chance to monitor the consumption of those who might overdo it — now they must show they’ll take that responsibility seriously.
The decision brings Everett into line with similar policies at virtually every other public course in the area. To boot, the city will make some much-needed money.
The city council was right to take control of the situation.
