n recent letters to the editor on the possibility of NASCAR building a track in our area, people have been expressing concern about noise, the number of events and the airport.
Where does this number for 200 events a year come from? There are only 52 weekends a year. I have been a NASCAR member and have driven a race car in Monroe for the past 10 years, and if local racing was to move to the new track, local racing is only goes from April through mid-September. At the most there would be two major events a year.
If events such as swap meets and RV shows were to be held there, they are far from noisy. As far as the Arlington airport is concerned, if it were to be closed down, it would equate to two weekends a year for a few hours. Think of the benefits for the airport. These NASCAR teams fly from track to track. They would bring money to the local area and the local airport. The Daytona International airport is right next door to Daytona International Speedway and you don’t hear them complaining.
The benefits of such a facility and major event are substantial both in jobs created and financially for the area. So I think we should stop trying to complain ourselves out of the running.
