After listening to all the complaints about Clay Bennett moving the basketball team to Oklahoma, I have decided that most of the so-called fans do not really understand how the system works. The group that purchased the team has every right to move them if they so desire; after all it is their money invested. The only reason Seattle’s mayor fought the move was strictly money, not fan desires.
When Howard Schultz sold the team it was no longer any of his business what happened to them. He made his money, now he is out of the picture! As far as another basketball team coming to Seattle, we had a chance to keep the one we already had but our legislators, for whatever reason, decided that they were not worth investing any money in so they let them go. Now it is time to either put up or shut up. If the fans truly want a professional basketball team here they are going to have to put the pressure where it matters and that may mean they might have to put up some money too. If you want something bad enough you have to work for it; nothing is free! So quit griping about a businessman who saw an opportunity and moved on it.
He did nothing to deceive anyone. He asked the state to rejuvenate the arena and they said no. So my wish for Mr. Bennett is good luck and I apologize to him for the fan attitude that felt he owed them something, when it was his money, not theirs, that purchased the team. If I bought a car and wanted to move it to Oregon would that violate some rule of ethics?
Grow up, fans. Accept life for what it is — nobody ever said it was going to be fair!
