Regarding the Tuesday letter, “Reality is, we have a two-party system”: The last time I looked, there was no mention in the Constitution about the United States being a two-party system. We have a de-facto two-party system because of the decades-long efforts of the Republicans and Democrats to pass laws to require third parties to jump through hoops that they themselves do not. Need I remind you that the Republicans were once a third party?
The letter states that people are doing strategic voting for opposite parties but supplies no proof of it. Were mind reading caps applied to the voters at the time of voting for you to determine this? All voting is “strategic” and the Constitution does not determine for us what our reasons must be, or who we must vote for. As for “climbing off the fence” I did decades ago, but my party was not listed on the “fair” ballot.
I have my own solution to this problem: abolish all political parties. Let us only allow individual candidates to run for office with no party affiliation and the voter merely picks the one that most closely represents their values. That is what people are trying to do anyhow. If people want simplified politics, they can go to China.
